While the opening weekend events of the 11th annual Masters of the American West Art Exposition and Sale, hosted by the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, may be over, the lasting benefits have only just begun. More than 70 of the world’s finest contemporary artists displayed over 300 new pieces at one of Western Art’s most important shows, but Walters was one of the few to come away with the honor of an award.
Walters’ prodigious centerpiece, “Splendid Turmoil,” was selected for the Trustees’ Purchase Award, given in recognition of artwork designated for purchase by the Autry National Center. A particularly stunning interpretation of the Grand Canyon, Walters’ signature subject, the painting measures 54” x 84”, and has become a part of the museum’s permanent collection.
In 1999, during his first appearance at the show, Walters received the David P. Usher Patrons’ Choice Award for “Canyon Sinuosity.”Calle Iturbide
