Winner of the 2008 Distinction Award

Curt Walters won The Artist of Distinction Award at the 3rd annual Quest for the West Art Show and Sale, held at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Artist of Distinction Award, sponsored by the Western Art Society, is presented to the artist with the best body of work. During the Quest for the West's inaugural show, Walters was awarded Best Overall Presentation, and the second year found him with a Victor Higgins Work of Distinction and the Patron's Choice Award.

Besides the award, the prize also comes with a special ninety day One-Man Show, which will kick off next year's opening day ceremonies. The pieces for the upcoming show will be borrowed from other museums and private collections, including The Autry National Center, the National Park Service, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

On hand to deliver the awards were Chief Curatorial Officer James Nottage and the Gund Curator of Western Art, Suzan Campbell, Ph.D. The news was greeted with a standing ovation.

Walters was on board for a special artist discussion panel, which included Arturo Chavez and Jay Moore, and was part of a large group to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway under tour guide Lynn St. James.

2008 Eiteljorg Quest for the West

Curt is next preparing to head East for the 3rd annual Quest for the West Art Show and Sale, held in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art.  Boasting more than 50 of America’s top Western artists, the show opens September 5, and runs through October 5, 2008.

Curt will attend the opening weekend events, to meet and mingle with fellow artists and patrons at the various receptions, demonstrations and ceremonies.  On Saturday, September 6, Curt will be a part of an artist discussion panel, which includes Jay Moore and Arturo Chávez, on the subtleties of landscape painting.

After the Prix de West art exhibition, the artist must work at a steady pace for long hours to meet the deadlines imposed by the Quest for the West show dates, usually just a scant three months after.  Unfortunately, Curt doesn’t even get all of that time; in order to appear in the annual catalog, he must complete his paintings weeks before showtime.

The centerpiece of his 3-piece display is "Evening's Dance of Light," a 36" x 36" view into Walters' immaculate vision of the Grand Canyon.  A second Grand Canyon, "Edge of the Storm," 28" x 22", will show alongside a small 10" x 12" plein air painting of apple trees blossoming in Oak Creek Canyon, titled "Spring Bloom at Garlands."

Ed Trumble, author of the book and founder of the legendary Leanin' Tree Museum, calls Walters "one of America's foremost landscape painters." As early as 1997, Art of the West Magazine hailed Walters the "Greatest Living Grand Canyon Artist."

The artist's work can be found at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, and the Pearse Art Museum in San Antonio. Original artwork is available at the Claggett/Rey Gallery in Vail, Colorado, and at The Trailside Galleries of Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson, Wyoming.

2007

Over the past decade, Curt Walters has become a phenomenon he only dared dream of as a struggling young painter. As an encore to his record-setting win at this year’s Prix de West, Walters scored a new pair of medals from the second annual Quest for the West Art Show and Sale at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“September Afternoon at Lake O’Hara” was the show’s big winner, given both the Victor Higgins Award of Distinction for the best individual work of the show, and the Patrons’ Choice Award, selected by the large body of collectors in attendance. The awards were presented by John Vanausdall, president and CEO of the museum, at a dinner banquet held after the Saturday sale.  Walters said, “So many of my past awards come from Grand Canyon paintings, so it feels good to be recognized for my other subject matter.”

The 2007 show featured four pieces by Walters, including one of his “signature” paintings of the Grand Canyon and a view of Mingus Mountain at sunset. Lake O’Hara, subject of the winning piece, is nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, in Yoho National Park. The fourth piece overlooks the Oregon coast.

In June of 2007, Walters was honored with the coveted Prix de West Purchase Award, as well as his third Nona Jean Hulsey Buyers’ Choice Award. In 2004 and 2005, the artist won the Frederic Remington Painting Award, an accomplishment never before achieved in the 34 year run of the show. Walters has also won Patron’s Choice Awards from the Masters of the American West show at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles, and the Artists of America show in Denver, in addition to the Best Overall Presentation Award from the first annual Quest for the West.

Long regarded at the “greatest living Grand Canyon artist,” the September/October 2007 issue of Wildlife Art Magazine dubbed Walters “Master of the Grand Canyon.” Two of his Grand Canyon’s are part of the permanent collection at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and a plethora of celebrities collect his work, including Christopher “Kip” Forbes, Kareem Abdul Jabar, and the late Merv Griffin.
