The Autry Win, 2008

Local artist Curt Walters has continued living up to his immaculate reputation as a True Master painter with yet another award from one of Western Art’s top two shows. At this year’s Masters of the American West exhibit at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, the artist received the Trustees’ Purchase Award, given in recognition of artwork designated for purchase by the museum. This places Walters side by side with other great American artists such as Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran and Thomas Hill, as well as contemporary greats such as Howard Terpning, Clyde Aspevig and Bob Kuhn.

Over the past decade, Sedona artist Curt Walters has become a phenomenon he only dared dream of as a struggling young painter.  As an encore to his record-setting win at this year’s Prix de West, Walters scored a new pair of accolades from the second annual Quest for the West Art Show and Sale at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

September Afternoon at Lake O’Hara” was the show’s big winner, given both the Victor Higgins Award of Distinction for the best individual work of the show, and the Patrons’ Choice Award, selected by the large body of collectors in attendance.  The awards were presented by John Vanausdall, president and CEO of the museum, at a dinner banquet held after the Saturday sale.  Walters said, “So many of my past awards come from Grand Canyon paintings, so it feels good to be recognized for my other subject matter.”
