The West Select Show at Phoenix Art Museum
It has been a whirlwind fall season for Sedona artist Curt Walters. After winning the Henry Farny award for Best Painting and the Patrons Choice Award at the Quest for the West show at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, Curt immediately jetted to Europe where he and fellow artists John and Terri Moyers painted in the Cornwall region of England. They also spent time in the great city of Vienna, Austria, and in Venice, Italy.
Curt painted twenty paintings, most of them 14 x 14 inches. Most of these works will be featured in a one-man show next June at the Nedra Matecci Galleries in Santa Fe, NM.
Curt has just finished three new paintings for The West Select Invitational at the Phoenix Art Museum in Phoenix, AZ. The show will open with an awards luncheon and evening sale on Friday, November 9.
Curt’s largest painting in the show is “Secret Vista Revisited,” an oil on canvas (24″ x 36″) that features a foreground formation near Maricopa Point, now closed to the public so the National Park Service can reestablish the natural growth that has been worn away by years of tourism.
Curt was given special permission to paint the location. He says, “It was much like visiting an old friend.”
His second entry is “Display of Defiance,” a 28″ x 28″ oil on canvas, painted over three early mornings last summer near the base of Court House Rock in Sedona. Featured in the foreground are spectacular blooming Yuccas, quite common in the sandy areas before the population and development almost destroyed them. Curt said” I am happy to have found these tenacious survivors.”
The third painting is “On the way to Albuquerque,” an oil on canvas board and 12″ x 12″. A sweeping desert view found twenty miles south of Santa Fe on I-25, the artist captures the Sandia Mountains from afar, as a monsoon sky sits over a dry wash.
Curt won The Best of Show and the Gold Medal for Painting for “Sun, Shadow, Wind” in last year’s West Select at Phoenix Art Museum.
Curt will feature new works at Trailside Galleries in Scottsdale, AZ, and will be in attendance at the Gallery Saturday, Nov 10.
Walters’ work can be viewed in museums across America, including the Forbes Magazine Galleries, the National Cowboy Museum, The Eiteljorg Museum, The Autry National Center, Gilcrease Museum of the Americas, The Pearce Art Museum, Leanin’ Tree Museum and at the Grand Canyon National Park collection. His work can be purchased at Trailside Galleries of Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson, Wyoming, the Claggett/Rey Gallery of Vail, Colorado and the Nedra Metteucci Galleries of Santa Fe, New Mexico..
