This is a plein air painting, done on site in Canyon de Chelly. The mythological stories that have surrounded this canyon for eons have fascinated me since I first saw the place as a child. the central formation in this painting is Speaking Rock (or, sometimes Talking Rock). Spider rock is not viewable in the painting, but sits across the valley. The Navajo’s stories explain that Talking Rock tells Spider Woman which children have been bad, and Spider Woman then takes these children to the top of her own towering rock, and eats them.
