The Alcazaba is a fortress, the oldest part of the Alhambra, in Granada, Spain. With special permission I was granted access to paint on the grounds of the Alhambra. In this painting I chose the vista atop the Vermilion Towers in late fall as the first snow touched the Sierra Nevada in the distance. The current complex of the Alhambra was built by Mohammed I, who constructed the ramparts around the previous castle of the Alcazaba that dates from the 9th century. It is thought that before it was built and before the Muslims arrived to Granada. Plein air painting in Southern Spain a great visual feast and history lesson all in one.
