Winter weather can hang at the Grand Canyon for many days, remaining overcast and frigid. I had stopped in the late afternoon to admire the great vistas and snow flurries from Mather Point on the South Rim, when in a magical moment, the sun dropped below the cloud bank and its rays burst through the cheerless gray like a spotlight. Suddenly, Isis Temple was aglow with her rugged shapes defined. Splendid Turmoil was inspired by that precise moment.
